ETHIOPIA
Large limestone deposits were discovered in ETHIOPIA over the last ten years. Ethio Cement Plc is a joint venture company promoted by local and Indian investors. The project site is located in the Oromia Regional State at Chancho, about 40km North of Addis Ababa. The ropeway carries limestone from the quarry next to the Muger River to the Debra plateau covering a distance of about 4 km and rising by about 800m. A trying material ropeway, as the distance covered is vast and the terrains are varied. This material ropeway was entirely tailor-made according to the client’s needs, since it required the limestone to be transported uphill, which is a unique circumstance. As a result, the construction of this ropeway required parts from various places, and a great degree of expertise.
